Chennai Super Kings Embrace Youth in IPL 2025
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 19: Stephen Fleming, the head coach of Chennai Super Kings, has indicated that the team's recent disappointing performances have prompted a shift from relying on seasoned players to placing trust in emerging talent during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
This weekend, a significant clash awaits as Chennai faces off against their long-time rivals, the Mumbai Indians, at the Wankhede Stadium. Currently, Chennai sits at the bottom of the league table with just four points, making their upcoming matches crucial for survival.
With Ayush Mahtre stepping in for the injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dewald Brevis replacing Gurjapneet Singh, Fleming noted that the five-time champions are set to utilize a broader range of players than in previous seasons of the lucrative league.
Fleming remarked, “Our current results have necessitated the involvement of all squad members. Traditionally, we have leaned towards experienced players who have delivered results, but when outcomes are lacking, it tests the philosophies of the entire squad,” as reported by a Media Channel.
He continued, “The inclusion of new players indicates that we will be deploying more squad members this year than ever before. We are still in contention for the tournament, but if results don’t favor us, we have several games to analyze how we can progress positively. Our focus remains on being competitive until the very end,” he added.
Chennai recently ended a five-match losing streak with a five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants. In their quest for a winning strategy, CSK made the bold decision to bench veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and seasoned opener Devon Conway.
Conway's spot was taken by 20-year-old Shaik Rasheed, whose debut performance included a rapid 27 runs off 19 balls, contributing to a solid 52-run partnership with Rachin Ravindra.
Fleming evaluated the batting lineup, stating, “We require a specific number of runs, and it’s essential for everyone to elevate their performance. They understand this, and it’s about securing a couple of wins.”
He concluded, “While we’ve had some promising performances, we need more substantial contributions. To clinch the title, our top three or four batsmen must account for 75% of the runs. The leading teams are achieving this, and we are aware of what is required from each player. We hope someone will step up in the upcoming match,” he added.
